YouTube has announced a new policy requiring creators to disclose when their content, particularly realistic videos, was generated using artificial intelligence (AI). This move comes amidst growing concerns about the spread of deepfakes and synthetic media, which could potentially deceive viewers into believing false narratives or events.
The platform’s new tool, integrated into Creator Studio, aims to address the challenge of distinguishing between real and AI-generated content. Creators will now be required to disclose when their videos feature altered or synthetic media, including generative AI, which could be mistaken for real people, places, or events.
This initiative aligns with YouTube’s commitment to combating misinformation and protecting users from deceptive content, especially as the use of AI tools becomes more prevalent in video production. The company’s decision to implement these disclosures comes in response to experts’ warnings about the potential risks posed by deepfakes, particularly in the context of significant events like elections.
Under the new policy, creators are not required to disclose content that is clearly unrealistic or animated, such as fantasy scenarios involving mythical creatures. However, videos that manipulate the likeness of real individuals, alter footage of real events or places, or depict realistic scenes of fictional major events must be clearly labeled.
To ensure transparency and accountability, YouTube will display labels prominently on videos, especially those addressing sensitive topics like health or news. The labels will be visible across all YouTube formats, starting with the mobile app and expanding to desktop and TV platforms in the coming weeks.
YouTube also plans to implement enforcement measures for creators who consistently fail to disclose AI-generated content. This includes adding labels to videos when creators do not do so themselves, particularly if the content has the potential to mislead or confuse viewers.
As AI technologies continue to evolve, platforms like YouTube are taking proactive steps to safeguard the integrity of their content and protect users from misinformation.
